Upon learning from my doctor that the only thing that would preserve my sight was a corneal transplant, my first reaction was fear. After he explained the procedure, I decided that day to get the transplant when a cornea would become available. Luckily, I did not have to wait too long. It's been seven months now and I cannot say enough good things about the success of the operation. Never did I have any negative thoughts before or after the operation.

I want to thank the Eye Bank and my doctors for the great gift of
sight. To donate your corneas so that someone will be able to see
and enjoy this wonderful and beautiful world is something you can't
know until you've spoken to a corneal recipient. You will always live
with a good feeling that you will help someone to see with your eyes.
All I can say to the Eye Bank and the donor is "Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you."

I have been blessed with many miracles in my life. One of the greatest of these miracles has been the restoration of my sight. Years ago my vision gradually became seriously impaired due to physical deterioration of both corneas. As a teacher and organist, it was almost impossible to carry out my duties in the classroom and in church. A future with possible blindness seemed very frightening, And then the miracle happened. I was given the opportunity to become a double recipient and receive again one of the most precious gifts in life - my sight.
As a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and organist, this precious gift of sight has
enabled me to give of myself in ways I never thought possible. My husband has been a
recipient as well, following a serious accident, We are both grateful to God and the
donors, as well as to the doctors, nurses and entire staff of the Eye Bank for their
dedicated help and commitment in making this miracle in both of our lives possible.

I am a senior citizen and a recipient of a cornea transplant in my right eye July 1998 and a cornea for transplant in my left eye October 1999. I sincerely thank the families of the two young man who donated their corneas to the Eye Bank. My condolence goes to these two families. I, too, lost a twin son at an early age in life. It is not easy, but God will help you through these trying times. |
I am very fortunate to have been put on the Eye Bank waiting list as a good candidate for corneal transplants.
Without the gift of sight, I would not have been able to get my driver’s license and maintain my independence. With the gift of sight, I will be able to go to church, the doctor's office, the grocery store, go shopping and visit friends. I have also been able to continue my volunteer work at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center, serving as Volunteer Chairman of Same Day Surgery, and was able to continue to serve as Auxiliary President for the past two years.
I want to thank the doctors, nurses, Eye Bank of OLOL, Baton Rouge Eye Bank Auxiliary and everyone at the Eye Medical Center and Surgery Center who had a part in the cornea transplants, and God as our Divine Physician for guiding the hands, hearts and minds for successful cornea transplants which gave me the gift of sight again.
